Pittsburgh Was Named One of 10 Cities Where Outdoor Lovers Can Actually Afford to Live

Realtor.com recently put out a list of the top ten cities where outdoor lovers can actually afford to live, and Pittsburgh was ranked #2 on the list.

Realtor.com evaluated the top ten most affordable cities for outdoor lovers by looking at features such as the number of national parks within a four-hour drive, restaurants with outdoor seating, annual months of mild weather, median home prices under $300,000, bicycle-friendliness, and more. 

Pittsburgh's median home price was listed at $175,000, and the area also has 18 state parks within a one-hour drive. The article also mentioned Ohiopyle State Park, where residents "can enjoy the 20,500-acre park's rock climbing, whitewater boating, sailing, and mountain biking trails."

  4. Greensboro, NC
  5. Dayton, OH

Home Sales are Rising in Western PA

According to West Penn Multi-List Inc., home sales in the Western Pennsylvania region, which is comprised of 17 counties,  are increasing.

West Penn Multi-List Inc.'s report found the first six months of the year to have shown an increase in residential real estate sales, with closed sales, closed sale volume, average sale price, and the number of homes sold all going up. The only challenge, according to West Penn Multi-List Inc.'s President Ron Croushore, is supply, as home listings are down.

Below is a comparison of January-June 2017 to January-June 2016
  • Closed sales are up 3.24 percent (13,682 units in 2017 versus 13,252 in 2016)
  • Closed sales volume is up 5.34 percent ($2,441,128,758 in 2017 versus $2,317,284,476 in 2016) 
  • Average sale price is up 2.03 percent ($178,419 in 2017 versus $174,863 in 2016)
  • Home listings are down 0.28 percent (18,433 units in 2017 versus 18,485 in 2016)
